The carot/karatage system is used to describe the amount of pure gold in any alloy (mix of metals).

Pure Gold is 24 karats, but it is too soft to make duarable jewellery products, so other metals are added to pure gold to make it harder and more resistant to wear and tear.

14kt gold contains 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts non gold metal, making it 58.3% pure gold.
